Nirbhaya gangrape: SC upholds death sentence for Jyoti Singh's rapists and murderers

Friday, May 5, 2017

The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence awarded to four men convicted of gang-raping and killing Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student in Delhi, on December 16, 2012. The fifth adult accused had killed himself in prison during the trial, and the sixth accused, a juvenile, was convicted by another court and sentenced to three years. The Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan gave two separate judgments in the case. Justice Banumathi wrote a separate judgment. However, she also concurred with Justices Misra and Bhushan over upholding the death sentence.  Noting the diabolical nature of the crime, the court said the mitigating circumstances warranted no merit. Evidence brought in by prosecution was sufficient and clinching in nature, the bench said. They also said that the CCTV footage submitted was correct. The death sentence was awarded to the four convicts Mukesh, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur by a trial court in 2013. The sentence was upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2014, which also rejected the convicts’ appeal and called

Kashmir situation: Everything is fair in love and war: Ram Madhav

Friday, April 21, 2017

New Delhi: The idea of using a Kashmiri man as a human shield against angry stonepelters in Kashmir by a young army officer was the right thing as everything is fair in love and war, BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav said on Thursday. There would have been huge amount of loss of human life. He (Army Major) tried to avoid that... One can try and take a moral position on what he did was right or wrong. In a war and love, everything is fair, Madhav told CNN-News18 in an interview. In this particular case, the young Major was left with two options: one was to allow the mob to lynch 50 civilians and closely equal number of security forces personnel there and the other option before him was to indulge in indiscriminate firing. I compliment that Major for not allowing both these things to happen, he said. Madhav said politicians should refrain from making such reckless comments as made by a BJP minister in Kashmir that bullets were the only way to deal with protesters. I disagree with this statement of the minister. Politicians better leave these matters to security forces. They know how to

This week marks the third change in the UI of app’s Android version. Other two changes included a sneak bar that houses the snapshot of the video that you are currently watching while the other change is made to the bottom navigation that now offers quick links to Home, Trending, Subscriptions and Library sections. All these changes will be implemented through a server-side update pushed by YouTube for its Android app. Other than the changes mentioned above, YouTube has also moved the Upload button to the left search bar. The upper row of search bar now permanently shows the text “YouTube” instead of the current section that the user is exploring in the

Only a handful of Windows phones will get the latest update

Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Virtually every Windows 10 PC can get the Creators Update, but phone owners won`t be so fortunate. Microsoft has revealed that only some Windows 10 Mobile devices will receive the Creators Update when it`s ready. The company`s own Lumia devices are covered, naturally (from the Lumia 550 and above), but it`s slim pickings beyond that -- the Alcatel Idol 4S, HP Elite X3 and VAIO Phone Biz are some of the few third-party examples that qualify. If you ask Microsoft, it`s all about setting performance expectations. Microsoft`s Dona Sarkar notes complaints that Windows wasn`t offering the best possible experience on older phones. In other words, Windows 10 Mobile was struggling outside of relatively recent hardware. Those users who do have the Creators Update on unsupported hardware can keep using it, but Sarkar stresses that they`ll be running the newer operating systems at their own risk. The move isn`t completely surprising, and is understandable. OS developers always have to think about cutting off support when their software becomes too demanding for legacy devices. For Microsoft, however, this is a

India turns to nuclear as energy crisis deepens

Sunday, September 28, 2014

India`s new prime minister is turning to nuclear energy to ease a power crisis made worse by the cancellation of hundreds of coal mining permits, but he faces scepticism both at home and abroad. Energy-starved India relies on coal to produce two thirds of its electricity, but power blackouts are common and demand is rising quickly as the economy and middle class expand. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court cancelled over 200 coal mining permits because the licensing process was deemed illegal, making the need for alternative energy sources yet more pressing. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made nuclear a priority as he seeks to fulfil his campaign pledge to kickstart the country`s flagging economy. But to succeed, he will need to convince a sceptical public that nuclear is safe, and dispel foreign proliferation concerns to secure the imports of uranium and technology that India needs to produce atomic energy. Concerns of power disruptions raised post the Supreme Court judgement on the coal issue show how reliance on single source of energy is unhealthy, said Amit Bhandari, energy and environment

Rampant corruption in health services impoverishes millions in India; government vows change

Sunday, September 28, 2014

Digamber Rawat rarely emerges from the tiny windowless room he shares with his parents because a mysterious illness has wasted away the strength in his legs. His family can`t afford private health care, but they must pay for it anyway, even when they go to free government hospitals for help. Rawat said that at a government hospital in central Delhi, a doctor ordered X-rays and scans that could have been performed in-house. But when we would go to the hospital lab for the tests, they would give us the name of a private clinic and say, `Go get it done there and then we will look at it,` he said. Tests at the hospital lab would have been 1,500 rupees ($25). At a private clinic, they cost more than $130. Rawat`s parents make a combined 15,000 rupees ($245) per month, barely enough to feed the family and buy medicine for their 21-year-old son. They knew we were poor, but they just didn`t care, said Rawat`s mother, Bhavna Devi, wiping tears with her threadbare sari. Rawat`s story is played out across India, where hundreds of millions of poor people without any kind of health insurance are forced to

New Delhi, The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday denied its involvement in any terror strike following allegations levelled against its chief Mohan Bhagwat by terror accused Swami Aseemanand. This is a political conspiracy. Aseemanand has clarified he never said this. We have to see the timing, said RSS leader Ram Madhav. We condemn this attempt to bring back the false allegations. Such false allegations were made earlier to defame RSS leadership but they were proved to wrong, he said. Aseemanand, in the court and outside, denied making such statements. Questions arise on the authenticity of the interview. The timing of the interview poses a political conspiracy, he added. Swami Aseemanand, accused in the blasts in the Samjhauta Express (February 2007), Hyderabad Mecca Masjid (May 2007) and Ajmer Dargah (October 2007), has claimed that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had sanctioned the attacks. A report in The Caravan magazine quoted Aseemanand as saying that Bhagwat, then RSS general secretary, told him that the blasts should not be linked to the Sangh. Aseemanand told The Caravan
