NCP differs with Rahul, says respect court order on Gujarat riots

Thursday, January 30, 2014

New Delhi, The NCP, a Congress ally, on Wednesday said any judicial pronouncement on Narendra Modi`s alleged involvement in the post-Godhra riots should be accepted and should not be questioned further. We are in an era when we believe that the judicial system is the final recourse to getting justice on any issue or to bring finality to any controversy and if the judicial system has given any pronouncement, we ought to respect it. We will not question it further, Union minister Praful Patel told reporters here. He was replying to questions on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi`s attack on the Gujarat chief minister in a television interview accusing his government of abetting and pushing the 2002 riots in the state. Patel said it was for each one to give his or her version in an interview but politics was based on perception of not just the politicians but the public too. But the fact remains that if the judicial system has given certain finality to any controversy, then we should let it rest there, the NCP leader said. Another allied leader Farooq Abdullah, a Union minister who

Forget differences, make Samajwadi Party win: Mulayam Singh Yadav

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Lucknow, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Wednesday told the ministers in Akhilesh cabinet to either ensure the victory of the party candidate contesting Lok Sabha elections from their respective assembly segment, or risk losing their ministerial berth. Talking to the ministers at a meeting held at party headquarters in Lucknow on Wednesday in connection with preparations for the general elections, Mulayam told the ministers that the party had stood by each one of them and he himself has personally attended to their issues. It is now time for you to stand by the party and ensure the victory of the SP, Mulayam said, adding that in case a candidate loses from the assembly segment of any of the ministers it would indicate that people were unhappy because the minister had failed to deliver. In such a situation, the party will have to nominate another MLA from the segment to the cabinet to ensure that the expectations of the people were being met. Mulayam called upon the ministers to work towards the elections thinking that he himself was contesting from all the 80 seats in UP and that the

AAP-Congress tensions worsen as Shinde rejects Kejriwal`s choice of anti-graft cop

Friday, January 24, 2014

New Delhi, AAP-Centre tensions seem to be escalating with the home ministry retracting its decision to appoint senior IPS officer Praveer Ranjan as chief of the Delhi government`s anti-corruption bureau, overturning a specific request by the CM. Ranjan`s appointment had been cleared on the request of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and the move to revisit the decision comes in the wake of a vituperative confrontation between AAP and the Centre over the CM`s demand for the suspension of four police officials. The Centre`s relations with the AAP government, never too robust to begin with, have taken a beating after Kejriwal repeatedly targeted home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, even leveling allegations of corruption against the senior Congress leader. Responding to Kejriwal`s attacks, Shinde described Kejriwal as a mad chief minister at a function in Maharashtra. According to sources, the Centre`s decision on Ranjan also comes in the wake of the appointment of about a dozen other Delhi Police officers to the ACB running into rough weather. However, the home ministry`s latest move to refuse

Congress will lose big in Andhra, TN; gain in Karnataka: Survey

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

New Delhi, Congress is heading for heavy losses in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu which were crucial for its victories in two straight Lok Sabha elections, but will make gains in Karnataka and will end up with the lion`s share of seats in Kerala if polls are held now. These are the findings of a mood tracking survey conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies for CNN-IBN channel. The findings of the sounding exercise confirm that Congress has lost substantial ground in Andhra and may end up with 5-9 seats, with its vote share shrinking to 24% from the 32% it had chalked up last time. YSR Congress is likely to win 11-19 seats, a forecast which suggests that the breakaway faction will get the bulk of the 25 seats in Seemandhra region. Importantly, TDP, which appeared be fading out, may stage a comeback of sorts with a possible tally of 9-15 seats, a happy augury for N Chandrababu Naidu`s new ally BJP which cannot boast of a sizeable base of its own in the state. In terms of vote share, TDP is just one per cent behind the 22% that the survey predicts for YSR Congress. BJP`s vote share

SC gives 14 days buffer to death row convicts

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed all prison authorities to give a gap of 14 days between intimation of rejection of mercy petition to the condemned prisoner and his actual execution to allow him to prepare mentally to make peace with god, prepare his will and meet family and friends one last time. It also was critical of the practice in certain jails to put a person in solitary confinement immediately after the trial court awarded death penalty after conviction and said a condemned prisoner could be put alone in a single cell only in the last 14 days of his life and not before that. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam found that some prison manuals did not provide for any minimum period between the President`s decision to reject a mercy petition being communicated to the condemned prisoner and his family members and the actual date of his execution. Some prison manuals have a minimum period of one day while others have 14 days, it said. It said there was a need to provide a minimum gap of 14 days between receipt of communication of rejection of mercy petition and scheduled

Devenderpal Singh Bhullar may latch on to SC relief for 15

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

New Delhi, The Supreme Court`s verdict letting 15 condemned prisoners off the hangman`s noose will come as an unexpected boon for death row prisoner Devenderpal Singh Bhullar and Rajiv Gandhi assassination case condemned prisoners Perarivalan, Santhan and Murugan. This verdict could serve as political aspirin for the headaches given by these two cases to Akali Dal and Congress. Despite the apex court`s judgment last year rejecting Bhullar`s mercy plea, the Akali Dal had made all out attempts to save Bhullar from the gallows. Congress was finding itself in a quandary over commutation of death sentence to Rajiv assassination convicts. Though the death sentence of another convict Nalini was commuted to life imprisonment after the intervention of Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, the party was finding it difficult to take a decision to commute death sentence of others convicted in the killing of their leader. Last year, a two-judge bench had rejected Bhullar`s plea for commutation of death penalty to life imprisonment. Bhullar had pleaded that the President took 11 years to dispose of his mercy plea

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal ends dharna, two cops sent on leave

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Delhi Chief #Minister Arvind Kejriwal`s (#AAP) unprecedented dharna in #Delhi came to an abrupt end on Tuesday night after two police officers were sent on leave under a neat compromise with the Centre over his demand for suspension of five officials for alleged dereliction of duty. This happened following an appeal by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, who partially acted on the #AAP leader`s demand for action against five policemen. His head wrapped with a woollen muffler, Kejriwal told the media and an army of supporters in the heart of the city that he and his ministers were ending the protest begun Monday `right here` -- outside Rail Bhavan, near the Rajpath boulevard where the Republic Day parade takes place. The announcement sparked off full-throated cries of `Inquilab Zindabad` and `Vande Mataram` from the mass of supporters. Jung stepped in to defuse what was developing to be a major crisis for the central government after Kejriwal threatened to continue his sit-in indefinitely, and police and Aam Aadmi Party activists clashed more than once leaving several people injured. Jung urged Kejriwal to

Narendra Modi eyes Delhi durbar, his durbaris besiege BJP

Monday, January 20, 2014

Ahmedabad, As he changes gears to race towards Delhi, Narendra Modi`s bandwagon is acquiring a strong Gujarati hue. Around two dozen functionaries of the state unit have climbed up the party hierarchy in recent months. So far, most of the BJP`s morchas and cells were heavily loaded in favour of politicians from Delhi and Gujarat`s representation was hardly anything to boast about. These are the people handpicked by Modi to smoothen his way in the party and make the 2014 election campaign more effective. The changes will, of course, ensure that his writ runs large in big and small party matters, a senior party leader in Delhi said. Most of the Gujarat leaders took up the positions in April 2013, barely a month before Modi was appointed as chairman of the BJP`s national campaign committee. Others took over in September, days before the Gujarat CM was anointed as the BJP`s prime ministerial candidate. In Sadbnavana mode, Modi has even elevated four Muslims from the state to the national body of BJP Minority Morcha. As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) threatens to take away young voters from BJP, the

Rahul dismisses AAP as peddler of impossible dreams

Saturday, January 18, 2014

New Delhi, For all the damage it inflicted on Congress`s pride, the Aam Aadmi Party came in only for passing mention, with Rahul Gandhi dismissing the new outfit as a seller of impossible dreams, well ahead of other political parties. It was quite a shift from Rahul`s comments, post defeats in four assembly elections in December last year, that Congress had a lot to learn from AAP and when he promised radical change in the party. Though he has been less eulogistic recently when he suggested AAP was looking at short-term gains, on Friday he disparagingly referred to the party as shysters who would seek to offer a haircut to bald people. BJP, well, they will sell combs to bald people. The newer entrants are one better, they will give hair cuts to the bald...This is the funny thing, he told his appreciative audience. If he looked to his left, he would have found several of the Congress worthies seated on stage who don`t exactly have a full head of hair. There was Congress treasurer Motilal Vora right behind and others who had prudently brought caps along. Congress chief Sonia Gandhi made no

Rahul slams Modi, says Cong cannot be destroyed

Saturday, January 18, 2014

New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi tore into Narendra Modi on Friday, slamming him for being a marketing person who could sell a comb to a bald man while underlining that Congress did not fan communalism for the sake of power. Whoever has tried to destroy it have themselves got destroyed, Rahul said. Rahul took a dig at the rivals who positioned themselves as one-man solution. He said, Democracy is not rule by diktat. We have struggled for this from last 100 years. Democracy is not rule by one man. He said it was about empowerment of lawmakers. Rahul said Congress did not respond to growing expectations from the government by turning people against one another, by lighting the fires of communal

Sonia Gandhi attacks BJP, says its divisive ideology biggest threat

Friday, January 17, 2014

New Delhi, Signalling that Congress is ready for the battle ahead in the Lok Sabha elections, party president Sonia Gandhi today attacked the BJP saying its divisive ideology is the biggest threat while it puts up a pretence of moderation. Facing BJP`s PM candidate Narendra Modi as the main opponent, she said secularism was a matter of deep faith for the Congress and not a matter of political compulsion. In 20-minute speech, she also touched on the issue of corruption, a major issue stalking the UPA II government, appealing to parties to rise above political considerations to ensure passage of anti-corruption measures pending in Parliament. The biggest threat before the country is from communal forces and ideologies. Congress stands for uniting the people...but what is the approach of our main political opponent? I will tell you. You know it yourself. It is to divide the society on communal lines and spread hatred in the name of unity to impose a single identity. They hide their real face behind the mask of moderate pretensions. They criticize our leaders and level false allegations against

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Thursday said Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has all the credentials for becoming the country`s prime minister and would prove much better than communal Narendra Modi. Kya kammi hain unme Pradhan Mantri banane me? (does he lack any quality to become Prime Minister?)... He has all the qualities for the high post, Prasad told reporters. Has he instigated any communal riot or indulged in crime against any community? the RJD chief asked rating Gandhi higher than the BJP`s prime ministerial nominee, Modi. Prasad, who has been rooting for a tie up with Congress in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections said he might be dubbed a sycophant for praising Gandhi but it is a fact that Gandhi is Prime Minister material. Crimes against women: Kejriwal puts blame on Delhi Police

Thursday, January 16, 2014

New Delhi, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday asked police to suspend four of its officers for allegedly refusing to act against sex and drug gangs and in a case of burning a woman. We are demanding... we are warning Delhi Police, Kejriwal told the media, using unusually harsh language for a chief minister. Delhi Police highly compromised, Kejriwal added. He demanded the suspension of the station house officers (SHO) of the Sagarpur and Malviya Nagar police stations and two assistant commissioners of police. The Sagarpur SHO, he said, did not arrest members of a family who allegedly set their daughter-in-law on fire. Kejriwal accused the SHO of Malviya Nagar of complicity with a bunch of foreigners in south Delhi allegedly involved in prostitution and drugs. People are not going to be mute spectators to what is going on, he said. The chief minister denied the charge that his ministers were interfering in the work of Delhi Police, saying it was the duty of the ministers to speak and act if they witnessed crime. Delhi have security not because of Delhi Police, he said,

Ramdev takes a swipe at Modi opponents

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Ranchi, Yoga guru Ramdev on Wednesday came down heavily on opponents of BJP`s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, criticizing Congress, AAP and RJD. Ramdev, who was in Ranchi to inaugurate a kite festival aimed at promoting Modi, said: Congress doesn`t need any Modi or Baba to defeat itself in the general election. Rahul is enough to bring shame to it. Predicting a landslide victory for Modi, Ramdev asked BJP leaders to prove their credentials by giving tickets to winning candidates. Modi has proved his credentials by delivering in Gujarat, which was acknowledged by voters in the four states that went to the polls recently, he said. He accused RJD chief Lalu Prasad of seeking Sonia Gandhi`s patronage in obtaining relief from court proceedings. He said Lalu has started Sonia vandana after he was released from jail. Ramdev described Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal as a man with two faces. He said: Kejriwal entered politics in the name of fighting corruption by the Congress, but is hugging Congress minister Kapil Sibal in

No AAP effect in politics: Maneka Gandhi

Thursday, January 16, 2014

Kanpur, Senior BJP leader and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday denied any Aam Aadmi Party effect in the country`s politics and claimed that the saffron party would have provided a more efficient government in Delhi. There is no effect of AAP and BJP would perform better than Congress and AAP in upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Maneka said while addressing reporters after attending a wildlife conservation programme at the Forest Training Institute in the city on Wednesday. Lashing out at the Congress, Maneka said, Congress is now a dead party. Despite hiring a PR agency for Rs 500 crore, it will end up at fourth position in the next Lok Sabha elections. As per reports, Congress had recently roped in Japanese advertising and communication firm Dentsu and Burson-Marsteller to strategise the 2014 Lok Sabha polls campaign for Rahul Gandhi. Maneka further said that nobody would be able to save the Congress from defeat in the general elections. Congress has minted money by stealing funds meant for widows. This time nobody can save it. People are very angry with the Congress because of issues like
