Bangkok Thailand’s capital Bangkok has been declared a disaster-affected area following widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall. The city received up to 300 millimetres (12 inches) of rain over around 48 hours, resulting in several areas being inundated.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt declared the city a disaster-affected area on Saturday, saying that the current situation poses a threat to people’s lives and could also cause damage to public and private property. Areas near canals have been reported to be among the worst affected.

Several major roads in Bangkok have been flooded following the heavy rainfall. Cars were seen partially submerged in water at several locations, while people were forced to wade through waist-deep water. The weather department has forecast continued stormy rainfall through the end of the week.

The Thai military is setting up temporary shelters and field kitchens for affected residents. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has prepared some schools as temporary accommodation and has urged people to avoid non-essential travel.

Authorities are also stepping up relief and rescue operations in flood-affected areas.
