NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stated that India’s contribution to per capita carbon emissions is less than half of the global average. Inaugurating the International Conference on the Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics in New Delhi, the Prime Minister emphasized that developing nations have often been unfairly held responsible for carbon emissions. He highlighted that India stands as the only G-20 member to have successfully fulfilled its COP-21 Paris Summit commitments ahead of schedule.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Modi noted that over the past twelve years, India has made "extraordinary progress" in environmental conservation. He specifically pointed to the nation’s wind energy capacity, which has witnessed a threefold growth during this period. The Prime Minister underscored that India is now prioritizing clean mobility, green hydrogen, and nuclear energy generation to lead the global transition toward sustainable energy.

Through international initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Global Biofuels Alliance, and Mission LiFE, India is setting new benchmarks for environmental protection. "India’s major focus has been on renewable energy, which plays a significant role in safeguarding our planet," the Prime Minister said.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, shared that non-fossil fuel sources now account for more than 54 percent of India’s installed electricity capacity, surpassing initial targets. Mr. Yadav noted that India currently ranks third globally in renewable energy capacity and is the world’s second-largest solar growth market, demonstrating that economic growth and climate action can progress simultaneously.
