Amritsar, October 27, 2026: In a shocking incident that has raised fresh questions about law and order in Punjab, the son of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-affiliated village sarpanch was shot dead near a gurdwara in Amritsar district on Monday evening, October 26.

The victim, identified as Teerath Singh, was returning after offering prayers at a gurdwara in Chite Kalan village when unidentified attackers opened fire. His friend, Ranjit Singh, was also injured in the attack.

7–8 Shots Fired Near Gurdwara

According to reports, Teerath Singh and his friend Ranjit Singh had visited the village gurdwara to offer prayers. As they were returning, assailants reportedly waiting nearby opened fire on them.

The attackers, reportedly travelling on motorcycles, fired around seven to eight rounds.

Teerath Singh sustained critical bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Ranjit Singh also suffered a bullet injury, reportedly to his leg. He is undergoing treatment and is said to be out of danger.

The incident took place within the jurisdiction of Chatiwind police station in Amritsar district.

Mother Is AAP Sarpanch, Brother Is Block Samiti Member

The victim belonged to a politically connected family associated with Punjab's ruling Aam Aadmi Party.

His mother, Paramjit Kaur, is the AAP-affiliated sarpanch of Chite Kalan village. His brother, Karaj Singh, is also associated with AAP and serves as a Block Samiti member.

The killing has triggered political criticism of the state government's handling of law and order.

Old Rivalry or Drug-Related Dispute? Police Investigating

Police suspect that an old personal rivalry may have led to the murder.

According to the preliminary investigation, one of the accused, Gurdit Singh, reportedly had a longstanding dispute with the victim's brother, Karaj Singh. Some reports have also mentioned a possible land-related dispute.

However, the victim's family has alleged that the attack was connected to an incident a few days earlier when the accused were stopped from consuming drugs.

Police have largely ruled out a purely political motive at this stage, although the exact circumstances behind the murder remain under investigation.

Four Named in FIR, Police Conducting Raids

Based on a complaint filed by the victim's brother, Karaj Singh, police registered an FIR naming four men from the same village:

  • Gurdit Singh
  • Gurjant Singh
  • Harkirat Singh, alias Hockey
  • Gora

According to reports available on October 27, no arrests had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

Police teams were conducting raids to locate the accused, while additional security personnel had been deployed in the area.

DSP Yadwinder Singh of Attari has been quoted in reports concerning the investigation.

Ravneet Singh Bittu Questions Punjab Government

The murder has sparked a political reaction, with BJP leader Ravneet Singh Bittu strongly criticising the AAP-led Punjab government.

Bittu alleged that the law-and-order situation in Punjab had deteriorated to the point where even the families of ruling-party representatives were not safe.

He called for stronger action by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and demanded his resignation.

His remarks come amid political criticism over recent incidents of gun violence in Punjab.

Who Is Safe in Punjab? Questions Over Law and Order

The killing of an AAP sarpanch's son has renewed political debate over public safety in Punjab.

While opposition leaders have questioned the government's law-and-order record, police are investigating the possibility of personal rivalry and other disputes behind the shooting.

The motive has not yet been conclusively established, and the investigation remains ongoing.
