Attack on UN Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon Raises Concern for 642 Indian Soldiers Deployed

Beirut: The ongoing tensions linked to the Iran–US conflict are now intensifying in Lebanon. As Israel continues to increase its attacks against Iran-backed Hezbollah, a new threat has emerged in the region. The United Nations peacekeeping mission UNIFIL has come under attack, raising serious concerns about the safety of peacekeepers deployed there. The issue is particularly significant for India, as 642 Indian soldiers are currently part of the mission.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday condemned incidents in which UNIFIL patrol units conducting routine operations were targeted near the towns of Yatar, Deir Kifa, and Qlaileh in southern Lebanon. The ministry described the attacks as a “serious and unacceptable” violation of international law and United Nations Security Council resolutions.

UNIFIL confirmed that three of its patrol teams were fired upon by a non-state armed group. Some reports suggest that the group could be Hezbollah, although no official confirmation has been given. According to UNIFIL, the peacekeepers returned fire in self-defense and later continued their patrol operations. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the latest incident.

This is not the first time the UN peacekeeping force has been targeted. Just last week, a UN base came under artillery fire, leaving three peacekeepers from Ghana injured. UNIFIL is currently investigating whether that attack was intentionally carried out by Israeli forces.

On Sunday, southern Lebanon witnessed several major attacks beyond the incident involving UNIFIL. Reports indicate heavy airstrikes around the city of Khiam, where Israeli ground forces are attempting to gain control while Hezbollah claims direct engagement with Israeli troops. Airstrikes were also reported in the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut.

For India, the situation holds special importance because the 642 Indian peacekeepers deployed in UNIFIL make up the mission’s second-largest contingent. Recently, India joined 29 other countries in calling for stronger protection of UN peacekeepers. In a joint statement, the countries emphasized that peacekeepers must never be targeted by attacks or threats and that the safety of UNIFIL personnel and facilities must be ensured at all times.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 with the objective of monitoring the ceasefire in southern Lebanon and assisting the Lebanese government in maintaining stability in the region. However, under current circumstances, the mission is operating in an extremely volatile and dangerous environment. According to the United Nations, more than 4,120 firing trajectories have been recorded from both sides of the Blue Line since March 1, indicating that tensions along the border remain highly explosive.
