The Delhi Police released Neha Bora, president of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), early Saturday, while Abhijeet Deepke, founder of the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ (CJP), is set to be produced before a Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court. According to the police, both were taken into preventive custody ahead of the ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ protest march scheduled for Friday at Connaught Place in Delhi.
Police officials said Bora was released after the formalities related to her detention under Section 65 of the Delhi Police Act were completed. Deepke, however, was arrested after a fresh case was registered against him under Sections 126 and 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for allegedly disturbing public peace.
The SEM court will decide whether Deepke should be sent to jail or released on bail. He had also been taken into custody at the airport on October 10 and was made to furnish a bond to maintain peace for one year.
Neha Bora Calls Detentions ‘Illegal’
After her release, Neha Bora strongly criticised the Delhi Police and the BJP-led central government, describing the detentions as “illegal.” She demanded an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign and be sent to jail.
Bora alleged that she was detained from Mandi House, kept at a police station throughout the night and denied access to lawyers.
AISA Alleges Denial of Medication
The All India Students’ Association (AISA) alleged that Bora was taken around different areas of Delhi for five hours after being detained before being brought to the R.K. Puram police station. The organisation further claimed that she was not given medication despite feeling unwell.
Meanwhile, the police said around 150 protesters had been taken into custody to maintain law and order and manage traffic. Additional police personnel, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), have been deployed at Central Park in Connaught Place.
