The Central Government has removed Delhi’s Jantar Mantar from the list of designated sites for protests and demonstrations. The government had designated Jantar Mantar as a protest venue around 33 years ago. The site has witnessed several prominent demonstrations, including the movement led by Anna Hazare, the wrestlers’ protest and a demonstration by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
Based on the recommendations of a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi have now been designated as sites for protests.
Limited Availability at Ramlila Maidan
According to the information available, Ramlila Maidan is vacant only from December 29 to 31 this year. As a result, organisations planning demonstrations will have to make arrangements according to the availability of the designated venues.
Cockroach Janata Party’s Request Denied
The Cockroach Janata Party had also sought permission to hold a protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a halt to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. However, the police refused to grant permission.
With Jantar Mantar removed from the list of designated protest sites, organisations planning sit-ins and demonstrations in Delhi will now have to use other designated venues.
