The United States has approved an additional one million US dollars to help Nepal identify victims of the floods, taking its State Department assistance for Nepal’s disaster response to more than five million dollars. The new funding will provide forensic support to Nepal Police.

The State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs approved the assistance to support the Nepali government in identifying victims.

US officials are working with Nepal Police to assess the most urgent requirements, including DNA analysis kits. The forensic assistance adds to earlier US funding for emergency food, shelter, healthcare and other relief for communities affected by the floods.

Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises to 1,386

Meanwhile, the death toll from flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,386, with more bodies recovered from eight affected districts.

The floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on the 26th of last month, devastated towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.
