Air Travel Set to Get Costlier! IndiGo Hikes Fuel Charges on Domestic and International Flights

Air passengers may have to pay more as the country's largest airline, IndiGo, has increased fuel charges on domestic and international flights. The revised charges will apply to all new bookings made from 12:01 am on October 6.

The airline has taken the decision amid a continued rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. According to ICRA, fuel accounts for 30-40% of an airline's operating expenses. Recently, ATF prices have increased significantly due to a rise in crude oil prices.

According to IndiGo, the month-on-month increase in aircraft fuel prices has crossed 14%. Aircraft fuel constitutes a major portion of an airline's operating expenses and affects its cost structure and network economics.

New Fuel Charges for Domestic Flights

Under the new structure for IndiGo's domestic flights, the fuel charge will be ₹375 for flights covering up to 500 kilometres. For flights covering more than 2,000 kilometres, the charge will be up to ₹1,300.

For flights covering 501 to 1,000 kilometres, the fuel charge will be ₹600. For distances between 1,001 and 1,500 kilometres, it will be ₹900, while flights covering 1,501 to 2,000 kilometres will attract a fuel charge of ₹1,150.
