Maha Kumbh Mela: Major Fire Incident at Prayagraj, 200 Camps Destroyed

A massive fire broke out in the Maha Kumbh Mela area near Shastri Bridge, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, causing extensive damage. The incident, which occurred in Sector 5, reportedly began when a gas cylinder exploded in a pilgrim camp. The blaze engulfed nearly 200 tents before being brought under control.

DIG Vaibhav Krishna, speaking on the incident, confirmed that there have been no casualties reported. "The fire is under control. Fortunately, there was no loss of life, though property damage is extensive. The cause of the fire, likely a cylinder explosion, is being investigated," he stated.

Timely Action Averted Major Tragedy

Officials have credited the fire brigade and emergency responders for their prompt action in containing the flames, which could have escalated given the crowded and windy conditions of the mela area. Witnesses expressed relief that the fire did not spread further, which could have caused catastrophic consequences.

Eyewitnesses reported panic as the flames spread rapidly. However, the fire brigade’s swift response prevented a larger tragedy. Many tents belonging to pilgrims were destroyed, and several gas cylinders in the vicinity were defused to avoid further explosions.

Relief and Rescue Operations

Local authorities, along with mela organizers, have launched relief efforts to assess the damage and provide support to affected pilgrims. Those whose tents were destroyed are being relocated to temporary accommodations. Officials have assured a thorough investigation into the incident and increased safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

While the fire has left many pilgrims distressed, the absence of casualties has brought a sense of relief. Residents and officials alike have expressed gratitude for the timely containment of the fire.
