In the ongoing deportation drive by the US, a special flight carrying 112 deportees landed at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar late on Sunday night. Among them, 31 were from Punjab, 44 from Haryana, 33 from Gujarat, two from Uttar Pradesh, and one each from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
This marks the third batch of deportees sent back to India within a short period. On February 10, a US military flight had brought back 117 deportees, including 65 from Punjab. Earlier, on February 5, 104 Indian nationals were deported.
According to officials, these deportees were part of the US government's crackdown on individuals who entered the country illegally, with most of them having arrived in the second week of January.
Unlike the previous two instances, Sunday’s deportation did not see much political activity at the airport. However, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) stepped in to provide assistance. Reports had surfaced that Sikh deportees on earlier flights were allegedly forced to remove their turbans. In response, the SGPC arranged turbans for them and also organized langar (community kitchen) for their families and visitors at the airport.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government arranged a special bus for the deportees. The bus, which usually operates under the CM Tirath Yatra Yojana to transport pilgrims to Prayagraj, was repurposed to take the deportees back to their respective hometowns in Haryana.
